Common questions

Can a car lock be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?

Often the lock can be repaired without replacing the whole unit. We check the lock's condition and repair it based on the most sensible and cost-effective solution.

My key won't turn in the ignition lock, where's the fault?

The fault can be in the key, the ignition lock, or both. We examine the key and the lock first so the repair targets the right part and no unnecessary work is done.

Can a worn key damage the lock?

Yes. A worn or bent key can strain the lock and make the fault worse. That's why we always check the key's condition too when repairing a lock.

Can a broken ignition lock be repaired without towing the car?

It depends on the fault and where the car is. In some cases we can advise the safest approach, but if the key won't turn or the car won't start, the car may need to be brought to us by tow.

How long does a lock repair take?

The time depends on the fault, the car model and whether the lock can be removed normally. Many lock repairs can be done the same day.

Will I get different keys for the car after the repair?

As a rule we repair the lock so your current key keeps working. We can also renew just the worn blade of the key, keeping the electronics unchanged. If needed, the lock can also be re-keyed.

Can you re-key the locks?

Yes. The locks can be re-keyed, for example if a key is lost and you want to be sure the lost mechanical key no longer opens the car's doors.

What do I do if a key broke off in the lock?

Don't push the broken piece deeper and don't dismantle the lock around it. Get in touch and we'll assess the safest way to remove the broken key and repair the lock. In some cases the car may still start with a broken key, since the immobiliser is checked at startup.

Do you repair locks by post too?

Yes, if the lock has been removed from the car. Send us the lock and the keys. Remember to include the car's details for the warranty and your own contact details for the return and payment link.

Can I keep using a lock if it still works sometimes?

A lock that only works occasionally is worth repairing before it jams completely. Once a lock stops working entirely, the repair can be harder and the car may be left undrivable.
